The town stands on the border with France, separated from the Baztan valley by the Otsondo pass. Various stone medieval bridges span the river Ugarana which runs through the town.

Its streets are dominated by homes featuring coats of arms, a notable example being that of Pedro Aguerre "Axular", a classic Basque writer who lived here during the first half of the 17th century.

The former monastery of San Salvador from the 9th century with its fascinating medieval layout has now been transformed into the parish church. Adjacent to it is the old 18th century mill where you can still watch the traditional milling process of wheat and corn.

The population is divided between the old town centre and five hamlets of farmhouses, notable amongst which is Leorlas where you can find the amazing Ikaburu caves.
